Recovering from an injury can be a difficult process, especially for athletes when it takes them out of the game. Dr. Mark Scholl and the competent staff at Endurance Orthopedics & Sports Medicine can make the recovery process a little easier.

As an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports orthopedic surgery and team physician for the U.S. Ski Team, USA Rugby, Solitude Mountain Resort, and Utah Blaze, Dr Scholl knows how to care for athletes.

“Recognizing the cause of injuries and helping to educate athletes about them is a big part of what we do,” he says.

Injuries of female athletes and raising awareness about them are something Dr. Scholl works hard at. Female athletes have three to eight times more ACL injuries than males. Especially with non-contact ACL injuries, he says identifying common posture or movement issues can help athletes avoid ACL injuries.

According to Dr. Scholl, female athletes don’t have as much knee and hip movement naturally and many injuries occur because they land incorrectly or change direction quickly. By making young athletes aware of how they naturally move and stand and how it could possibly cause an injury, he helps them learn the correct way to utilize their body.

Working with youth female soccer leagues and also male sports programs enables Dr. Scholl to encourage stretching routines and training programs that will help limit injuries. He works with coaches and parents to help them identify potential issues so they can educate the athletes.

“It doesn’t take a lot of training to understand the risk some of these athletes face because they aren’t positioning their bodies correctly,” he says. “Gradually, it becomes second nature to them and they are able to compete without these same risks.”

A pre-work out warm up can identify potential problems before the athletes take the field. Dr. Scholl recommends visiting www.enduranceortho.com for more information about female ACL injuries and to utilize an interactive patient diagnosis feature.

“We want athletes to be aware of the position their body is before they take the field. It gives them time to make corrections before the game is on the line,” he says.
