Olympus football and volleyball teams wrap up season with bids for state

The Titan volleyball team made a good run at the 4A state playoffs Nov. 4-5 at UVU in Orem. Olympus, which finished the regular season with a 15-13 record, went into the playoffs as second place from Region 7, and had home court advantage over Region 5 third-place Bonneville. Olympus won the match, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18.

The Titans next defeated Region 6 champion Woods Cross 25-20, 22-25, 18-25, 25-23 to advance to the semifinal match against Region 8 champion Salem Hills. The Titans were defeated in three straight games, 25-16, 25-22, 25-18.

The loss sent Olympus to the one-loss bracket, where they were defeated by Region 7 champion and rival Skyline 25-18, 25-14, 25-14. That gave the Titans a fourth-place finish in state.

The Olympus football team looked good going into the state playoffs, with an undefeated region record and 8-1 overall for the season.

The Titans first-round game was a 17-12 home-field victory over Box Elder on Oct. 28. Scoring was by seniors Brandon McBride (25 yard run) Nate Sorenson (26 yard pass from Scott Porter) and a field goal and two points after the touchdowns by Nick Christensen.

The win gave the Titans another home game, against Bountiful Nov. 4 in the quarterfinal level of the playoffs. Bountiful’s defense hobbled the Olympus strong-point passing game, limiting Porter to 18 of 32 completed passes, and holding the Titans to two touchdowns despite 234 yards of passing. Scoring receivers for the game were McBride and senior Chandler Thornton, with seniors Nate Watchman and Scott Jeppson leading the defense with nine tackles each. Senior Nico Bronzati had eight tackles and an interception for the Titans.

The Titans were unable to control the Braves’ running game, which managed four touchdowns and 247 yards rushing. Final score was 34-14 for Bountiful, and Olympus was eliminated from the playoffs.
